In Washington-Everybody Wins!

The greatest share of Lottery proceeds is returned to the state and its residents in three ways–as prizes, as retailer commissions, and as transfers to the state’s Student Achievement Fund, Education Construction Fund, and General Fund.

Building communities is an important part of the Lottery’s contributions to education funding by helping to build classrooms, lecture halls, laboratories, and student athletic facilities around the state. Lottery dollars also help fund professional athletic facilities. Construction of world-class stadiums for baseball, football, soccer, and more creates jobs to benefit Washington communities.

The Washington Lottery is a business, and its staff members are committed to excellence in running this business. They are also committed to generating the maximum amount of revenues for the state while making a positive difference in the lives of Washington residents. Staff and business partners constantly look for innovative ways to operate the Lottery more efficiently, while increasing sales, expanding services, and keeping up with the latest technologies.

Lottery Goes Back to School

Beginning July 1, 2001, the Lottery went back to school in a special way. As part of a larger funding package determined by voter approval of Initiative 728, all Lottery dollars previously transferred to the State General Fund from the sale of Lotto Plus, Lucky for Life, Scratch, The Daily Game, and Daily Keno now go directly to education through the Student Achievement and Education Construction funds. With the addition of Mega Millions in Washington, Lottery funds for education are expected to reach more than $100 million per year, with remaining revenues transferred to stadium commitments and the State General Fund.

Through the Student Achievement Fund, Lottery dollars help schools reduce class sizes, offer enhanced learning opportunities for both teachers and students, and provide tutoring to improve student success. Schools such as:

• Coupeville Elementary School on Whidbey Island, which for the first time is able to offer full-day kindergarten and extended school days for students in need of extra help.
• Trout Lake Middle School in South Central Washington, which added a math specialist to help improve student achievement.
• White River School District in Buckley, which reduced class size by five students in each of its kindergarten and first-grade classrooms, so children can receive the personalized attention they need during the crucial early learning years.

Education Construction funds help schools make physical improvements and renovations to existing buildings or fund new construction. This helps ensure Washington students learn in safe, modern environments. The Education Construction funds have been used to build Greenwood Elementary School in Seattle, a new high school in Camas, Clark County, and a Communications building at Western Washington University, as well as modernize Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma.
