Proceeds from the West Virginia Lottery

Since its start in 1986, the West Virginia Lottery has provided more than one billion dollars to help improve the lives of all West Virginians. This figure includes profits transferred to state's general fund from 1986-1989, as well as video lottery profits. Since 1989, Lottery proceeds have been dedicated by the West Virginia Legislature to specific beneficiary programs. Here are the three programs - seniors, education and state parks & tourism and examples of the types of funding provided:

Seniors

Good Things such as Senior Centers, home health care, transportation and other services. Many of these programs make it possible for senior citizens to continue living with dignity in their homes.

Education

Good Things like handicap - accessible facilities at Hawk's Nest and a new swimming pool at Beech Fork State Park. These many projects help to ensure that our state parks remain a treasure for all West Virginians.

Good Things like nearly 40,000 classroom computers that are giving West Virginia's students a chance to prepare for the challenges they will face in the next century. New schools to bring state of the art laboratories, classrooms and equipment to students.
